Culinary highlights

The flavours of the Weinviertel

Austria’s largest winegrowing area is not only famous for its outstanding wines – particularly the peppery Weinviertel DAC – this part of north-eastern Austria is a hotbed of culinary excellence all year round. Fans of the finer things in life are in their element here...

Fresh herbs and baked goodies

In spring the Weinviertel comes back to life for tourists, the landscape comes into bloom and the first produce from the land hits the region’s dining tables. Wild garlic, asparagus and herbs get the year off to a flavour-packed start. In summer the trees and bushes are laden with ripening fruit: raspberries, strawberries, cherries, apricots and many other varieties give Weinviertel cuisine a serious vitamin boost. In autumn root vegetables set a different tone, in harvest time. Pumpkins, onions and potatoes are all popular ingredients. In winter cookies and mulled wine are served alongside plaited Striezel loaves and delicious Wuchteln brioche-like squares filled with jam. Pickles and preserves are also popular at this time of year.

Weinviertel Heuriger wine taverns

Anyone looking for an authentic taste of Weinviertel wine should set time aside for a trip to a traditional Heuriger wine tavern! When people talk about Heurigen in the Weinviertel they are often referring to a Buschenschank: informal spaces operated by the growers and restricted to limited seasonal opening hours. That said, there are also lots of well established year-round options too.

Local delicacies
At a Heuriger wine tavern, the fine wines are often served with typical regional dishes – locally-produced sausage and cheeses, cured hams, bacon, cold meats such as gammon and black pudding, as well as no-end of delicious spreads and other treats. One firm Heuriger favourite is the ‘Brettljausen’ – served on a wooden board (Brettl), this cold platter consists of various meats and spreads, and vegetables such as pickled cucumbers and spicy peppers. Other Heurigen with a special licence also serve hot food, with staples such as potato dumplings filled with pork crackling, rissoles, and roast pork among the favourites
